11/15/05 - Arlington-Fairfax IWLA issue, Fairfax at it again
************************************************************** 1. Action item: Arlington-Fairfax Isaac Walton League members ************************************************************** If you are a member of the Arlington-Fairfax Isaac Walton League of America (IWLA), you should attend the meeting tonight, Tuesday, November 15th, at 7:30 PM at the Arlington-Fairfax Chapter. At issue is that the Chapter is considering selling its property to a third-party non-profit organization and then leasing it back. There is a concern that this arrangement *could* affect your ability to shoot on the property at some point in the future. It is therefore recommended that Arlington-Fairfax IWLA members go to the meeting tonight, listen to the arguments, and cast an informed vote on the arrangement. ************************************************************** 2. Action item: Fairfax County residents - Fairfax, here they go again! ************************************************************** You know its time for the General Assembly to meet again when bureaucrats and anti-gunner local politicians start drafting up their anti-Second Amendment wish lists for state legislation. Fairfax County is taking the lead on this, and it's not pretty. The Fairfax County School Board is now considering its draft program which will likely trickle down into the County Board of Supervisors Program. On page 30 of the program see the following: 1. Wants school board level authority to ban possession of all weapons on school property. 2. Wants localities to have power to ban weapons in locality recreation centers. 3. Wants localities to have power to prohibit sale of "look alike" guns and BB/pellet guns to all minors. Here's what we need to do to hobble the anti-gunners: a. Anyone who lives, works, or goes to school in Fairfax County needs to send the entire school board an email ASAP telling them to drop these provisions in their program. b. If possible, VCDL members should show up on December 1 to attend the School Board meeting at 7 PM at Jackson Middle school and speak AGAINST the above items and to speak FOR CHP carry on K-12 school grounds. Sample email: TO: SchoolBoardMembers*fcps.edu, Jack.Dale*fcps.edu CC: chairman*fairfaxcounty.gov, dranesville*fairfaxcounty.gov, braddock*fairfaxcounty.gov, hntrmill*fairfaxcounty.gov, mason*fairfaxcounty.gov, mtvernon*fairfaxcounty.gov, provdist*fairfaxcounty.gov, springfield*fairfaxcounty.gov, sully*co.fairfax.va.us, Leedist*FairfaxCounty.gov SUBJECT: Drop Firearms Restrictions from 2006 Legislative Program Dear FCPS School Board and Superintendent Dale: I am very unsatisfied with the draft FCPS 2006 Legislative Program's items on page 30 of http://www.fcps.edu/legupdate/05lpfinal.pdf in which, while masquerading as "student safety" initiatives, the school staff suggests that you ask the General Assembly for: 1. School board authority to ban firearm possession by law abiding citizens on K-12 school grounds. 2. Locality authority to ban firearm possession by law abiding citizens at locality recreation centers. 3. Locality authority to ban sale of toy guns, BB guns, and pellet guns to minors. The last thing we need to is to create a confusing patchwork of firearm laws in Virginia, or to "double down" on the already outrageous problem that Virginia law largely makes K-12 schools a victim disarmament zone for children and the visiting public. Please delete the three agenda items. Furthermore, I ask that you to add a NEW agenda item to your program to urge the General Assembly to amend Va. Code Section 18.2-308.1 to conform to federal law by exempting concealed handgun permit holders from any restriction on firearm carriage on K-12 school grounds. THAT would be an effective "student safety" measure and criminal deterrent for K-12 schools.
