10/27/09 - Chairmans Thoughts On VCDL PAC Endorsements

Abbreviations used in VA-ALERT: http://www.vcdl.org/help/abbr.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I feel that I need to answer the questions of several of you as to why we endorsed or did not endorsed certain candidates for the House of Delegates. First - VCDL and VCDL PAC are SINGLE ISSUE GROUPS. We support the gun rights of Virginia Voters and that is the ONLY issue we evaluate in making endorsements of candidates. Second - VCDL sends a survey to EVERY candidate and someone on the candidates campaign staff held the blank survey in their hands and made a decision on whether to show it to the candidate, but the candidate is the one responsible. VCDL also lets it's members know who has not responded so that their constituents can voice their displeasure. Third - VCDL PAC can not endorse a candidate who has not returned the survey - that is a firm rule no matter what the candidates voting record looks like. in several cases, there are those with very good voting records who will not communicate their views in writing to the voters. That disappoints us and ties our hands. VCDL PAC will not compromise the principle that candidates should openly tell the voters (our members) what their position is (in writing) on key right to bear arms legislation. In all honesty, we are very confused as well by several unreturned surveys. We hope all candidates, regardless of party, return their surveys in coming year and honestly communicate with the voters.
