would be a small price to pay had someone really been in the rear of the vehicle injured or even worse. Semper Fi ************************************************** 33. VA-ALERT reader: 'slug article' numbers don't make sense ************************************************** A VA-ALERT reader questions an article about a freak shotgun slug ricochet in a previous VA-ALERT ("'Ammunition' on allowing rifle shooting in Suffolk," 9/1/09). Actually several readers had similar concerns. Joe Ligon emailed me this: -- Philip, Something about these numbers from the slug article doesn't seem to make sense. Here the rifle, shotgun and muzzleloader projectiles travel 1,408', 840', and 686' respectfully plus ricochet distances of 3,427', 4,365', = and 3,812' respectfully. Now the total distances traveled by the projectiles are 4,835' for the = rifle, 5,205' for the shotgun and 4,498' for the muzzleloader. I'm not a physics major by any stretch of the imagination but can someone explain to me how a projectile that ricochets at the end of its flight path of 840' can then pick up enough energy to travel an additional 4,365' that is over five times its original flight distance. It makes sense that the muzzleloader data and the slug data are comparable as the Barnes muzzleloader bullets and the Barnes shotgun slugs I use are virtually identical in weight. The 54 caliber black powder slug and the 12 ga sabot slug are very close and the 20 ga slug = is equivalent to the 50 cal black powder saboted bullet.
